Backscattering by and Propagation Through the Melting Layer of Precipitation: A New Polarimetric Mod - Geoscience and Remote Sensing, IEEE Transactions on

چکیده
Abstruct-A simple physical model of the melting layer of precipitation is presented. It is able to simulate the polarizationdependence of radar reflections and radio signals propagating through the melting layer. The radar observables are calculated in the Rayleigh regime. The propagation observables are given in the range of 5-50 GHz, and are calculated with an extended Rayleigh approximation. The model requires the rain intensity and the mass density of the snowfiakes as input parameters. Radar observations, made with the Delft Atmospheric Research Radar, are used to discuss physical processes in the melting layer. Finally, model simulations are compared with radar data obtained with the Chilbolton radar of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratories.

Maximum-likelihood estimation of specific differential phase and attenuation in rain
Precise estimation of propagation parameters in precipitation media is of interest to improve the performance of communications systems and in remote sensing applications. In this paper, we present maximum-likelihood estimators of specific attenuation and specific differential phase in rain. The model used for obtaining the cited estimators assumes coherent propagation, reflection symmetry of t...
متن کاملMeasurements of the propagation parameters of tree canopies at MMW frequencies
The presence of trees in a given scene can hamper detection of nearby targets by millimeter-wave radars especially at near grazing incidence. Proper characterization of scattering and attenuation in tree canopies is important for optimal detection algorithms. In this paper, a new technique for determining the extinction and volume backscattering coefficients in tree canopies using the measured ...
متن کاملSemi-empirical model of the ensemble-averaged differential Mueller matrix for microwave backscattering from bare soil surfaces
A semi-empirical model of the ensemble-averaged differential Mueller matrix for microwave backscattering from bare soil surfaces is presented. Based on existing scattering models and data sets measured by polarimetric scatterometers and the JPL AirSAR, the parameters of the co-polarized phase-difference probability density function, namely the degree of correlation and the co-polarized phase-di...
متن کاملSingle-baseline polarimetric SAR interferometry
The objective of this paper is to examine the application of single-baseline polarimetric SAR interferometry to the remote sensing and measurement of structure over forested terrain. For this, a polarimetric coherent scattering model for vegetation cover suitable for the estimation of forest parameters from interferometric observables is introduced, discussed and validated. Based on this model,...
متن کاملInverse Modeling of GPS Multipath for Snow Depth Estimation - Part I: Formulation and Simulations
Snowpacks provide reservoirs of freshwater. The amount stored and how fast it is released by melting are vital information for both scientists and water supply managers. GPS multipath reflectometry (GPS-MR) is a new technique that can be used to measure snow depth. Signal-tonoise ratio (SNR) data collected by GPS inst uments exhibit peaks and troughs as coherent direct and reflected signals go ...
